- The answer gets a little complicated, and technical. The short answer
- is you want to set the modem to computer rate somewhat higher than
- the rate the modem can run at. If possible you would want it to
- be 4 times the modem to modem rate!
-
- The reason is that the modem can, and does save up data in a buffer,
- and can and does dump it to the computer faster than it comes in over
- the phone line. The main reason for that is because modems can
- compress data. That means one end feeds a 4Mb file into the modem
- and the modem only sends 1Mb to the other modem, but what comes out
- of that modem is 4Mb. (That is an extreme example, and you will
- never see a whole file compressed at 4:1, but it describes the
- point!) In addition, even if compression is not used, the modem
- to computer link is called an "asynchronous" link and for each
- 8 bit byte it adds a start bit and a stop bit. The modem doesn't
- send those though. It uses a "syncrhronous" link. So it already
- runs at 20% faster than the same rate over the modem to computer
- link appears to run. You can take advantage of that by running
- the computer link at a higher rate.
-
- The 19.2Kbps rate suggested will handle the continous 20% increase,
- but it won't allow any room for using compression. If your modem
- and your computer will handle a higher rate, I would suggest at
- least 38.4, and even higher if possible (though it won't really
- make much difference at all going higher than that).
-
- Have a good day,
- Floyd
